About the Western Coastal Board
The Western Coastal
Board consists of 12 members appointed
by the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change for a three-year
term under the Coastal Management Act, 1995.
Role of the
Board
The functions of the Board under the Act include:
- Develop Coastal
Action Plans;
- Provide advice
to the Minister, the Victorian Coastal Council and government on coastal
issues;
- Prepare and
publish guidelines for coastal planning and management;
- Facilitate public
awareness, consultation and involvement in the development and implementation
of the Victorian Coastal Strategy, Coastal Action Plans and coastal
guidelines;
- Liaise with
and encourage the cooperation of departments, councils, public authorities,
industry, community groups and others involved in the planning and
management of the region in developing and implementing strategic
solutions to matters affecting the conservation and use of the region's
coasts.

Victorian Coastal Strategy 2008 for our coast is:
A biologically and culturally rich, diverse coastal,
estuarine and marine environment that is managed for its protection,
sustainable use and enjoyment today and for future generations.
The Western Coastal
Board contributes to the achievement of this vision by:
- Applying and
promoting sustainability concepts and principles;
- Strengthening
partnerships and networks;
- Assessing and
improving the effectiveness of coastal programs;
- Taking a bold
approach to interpreting and applying coastal policy;
- Providing leadership
and support to coastal and marine strategic planning;
- Encouraging
community participation in coastal management issues
